Olivia ist eine Waise in einem Heim. Als wäre dieses Schicksal nicht schwer genug, ist sie stumm (wird dementsprechend häufig für dumm gehalten und gehänselt) und kann Geister sehen. Ihr einziger Trost ist ein altes Tagebuch ihrer Mutter. 

Eines Tages erhält sie einen Brief, in dem ihr Onkel verzweifelt nach ihr sucht und sie zu sich und ihrer verbliebenen Familie einlädt - nach Gallant, einem Wort, vor dem ihre Mutter sie in ihren Aufzeichnungen eindringlich gewarnt hat. Doch waren das wirklich nur die Kritzeleien einer Frau, die langsam den Verstand verliert? Für Olivia steht fest: Alles ist besser als dieses Heim und so nimmt sie ihre Chance auf eine echte Familie wahr - natürlich mit spannenden Folgen für alle Beteiligten...

Lasst mich euch eine Geschichte erzählen von einer fixen Idee: Nachdem ich mich in Schwabs letztes Werk "Addie LaRue" verliebt hatte (das letztes Jahr erschien und übrigens immer noch auf der NYT Bestsellerliste steht!), kam mir der Gedanke, einfach bei ihrer Agentin anzufragen, ob ich ein Vorabexemplar haben könnte. Nein sagen können sie ja immer noch. Ich hörte nie etwas zurück, doch gut 6 Wochen später lag dieses Buch auf meinem Schreibtisch (daher auch die Englische Version unten). Ich habe völlig überrascht erstmal losgequietscht und meine Kollegen etwas verstört. Hust. Zurück zum eigentlichen Star hier: 

Dadurch, dass die Illustrationen aus dem Notizbuch auch in unserem Exemplar abgebildet sind, erhalten wir praktisch zwei Bücher: Olivias Geschichte und die ihrer Eltern. Sowas liebe ich ja! Und die Illustrationen sind auch noch absolut irre und ich habe auf jede davon mindestens 5 Minuten gestarrt und immer noch was Neues entdeckt.

Not accidents at all but drawings." 

Ein Manko war allerdings, dass die Szenen auf den schwarzen Seiten immer mit "The master of the house..." beginnen, sodass ich konstant einen "Les Miserables"-Ohrwurm hatte ;)

Da es in Richtung Horror geht, war ich erstaunt, Schwabs Jugendbuch-Name auf dem Cover zu sehen. Offiziell ist es ab 13 freigegeben. Falls ihr also Geister wenig gruselig und Spukhäuser spannend findet, wagt einen Besuch nach Gallant!

"Real, she is learning, is a slippery thing, not a solid black line but a shape with soft edges, a great deal of gray." 

Das Buch erscheint im März auf Englisch (und in den Gruppen wird stark vermutet, dass Illumicrate eine Special Edition produzieren wird) und nach dem Erfolg von Addie LaRue im März 2023 bei Fischer auf Deutsch.

Olivia lives in a home for orphans. As if that fate wasn't tough enough, she is mute (therefore people think she is dumb and tease her) and can see ghosts. Her only solace is her mother's old diary.  

One day a letter arrives in which her uncle frantically searches for her and invites her to join the family - at Gallant, a word that her mother warned her about. But were those words the ramblings of a madwoman? Olivia is sure, anything will be better than the orphanage and so she goes on a journey to find a real family - with interesting consequences for all involved...

Let me tell you a story about a whim: After hopelessly falling in love with Schwabs last book "Addie LaRue" (which came out last year and is still on the NYT bestseller list, by the way!) I had the idea to ask her publisher for an ARC (Advance Reading Copy) - the worst that could happen would be a No, right? I never heard back, but about 6 weeks later this book appeared on my desk. Completely surprised I squealed loudly and disturbed my coworkers. Whoopsi! But back to topic:

Since the illustrations from the mother's notebook are also printed in our copy, we practically get two books in one: Olivia's story and her parents'. I love meta-stuff like this! Adding to that, the illustrations are stunning and I stared at each one of them for at least 5 minutes, still finding new details.

However, one "negative" point was that the scenes on the black pages always started with "The master of the house..." which resulted in a constant "Les Miserables"-earworm ;)

Since it seems to be more horror, I was surprised to see Schwabs Young-Adult-name on the cover. Officially the blurb states ages 13 and up. So if you ain't afraid of no ghost and delight in discovering the secrets of haunted houses, try visiting Gallant!

The book comes out in March, 2022 (and my reading groups suspect that Illumicrate will have a special edition!) and after the success of Addie a German translation will be available from Fischer.
